Track map for Østjylland

[track map goes here]
[scalable pdf for printing] [ps.gz]

This map shows the middle part of the main line in Jutland, from Fredericia through Århus to Langå. The main line runs roughly along the eastern side of the peninsula, connecting the cities at the inner end of the fjords. North of Langå the line continues on map H.

Local lines to Grenå and Odder branch off at Århus. Lines toward the midland branch off westwards at Vejle, Skanderborg, and Langå. These are on map I.

Århus

Århus, Denmark's second largest city, is blessed with the double gift of a large and complex railway station and a road bridge that hovers high above the tracks, so one has a pretty good view of what goes on.

In the middle of the map, around the turntable, is the locomotive depot and workshops. To the left of the workshop is a drive-through washer for passenger trains, and a group of 5 holding tracks for IC3 DMUs. Then, shown in an off angle is a building that looks to me like a parcels terminal. Further left of that is the usual fanout of stub-ended tracks where trucks and railway cars rendezvous.

Below all this is the freight marshalling yard, with arrival and departure tracks just below the IC3 washer and the actual shunting tracks left of them. The outer end of the marshalling yard cannot be easily observed, and, for now, is left out.

The triple track on the overpass just below the turntable on the map are, from left to right: A shunting track, the incoming main track from Langå, and the outgoing main track towards Langå. Notice the left-hand running until the tracks pass over each other some distance north of the station.

Left of these is a holding and servicing area for passenger trains. Then comes the double track towards Copenhagen and the (single-track) private railway towards Odder.
