Track map for Nordjylland

This map shows the northern end of the national main line, from Randers to Frederikshavn.

Just south of Randers an abandoned line to Ryomgård on the Århus-Grenå line branches off. The inner part is used for freight customers at Strømmen station in the southern end of the city of Randers. A short stretch at the far end, just before Ryomgård, is also used as a freight siding. The mean interval is used by rail-cycling tourists in the summer.

The harbour track in Randers, which also lead to the Scandia (now Bombardier) train factory, passes by a major tourist attraction (as far as understand, a »rain forest« grewn in a large glass dome). A minimal platform has been built here, and are serviced by the veteran trips - Wednesdays they continue from Strømmen (via the main station), and on Sundays trips from MHVJ go to Randers and terminate here.

MHVJ (Mariager-Handest Veteran Railway) is a preserved railway which connects to the »real-life« rails at Fårup. Ordinarily it ends in Handest, just short of Fårup, but a significant fraction of its (non-steam) trains continue to Randers on the main line.

Another preserved railway, Limfjordsbanen, connects at Aalborg. It makes a large curve around the city and ends at the heavy industry harbour east of it. I don't know if there is still some regular freight out there or if it is all stream.

I've followed the harbour tracks in Nørresundby somewhat longer than I usually do, mainly because I got an evening to spare while attending ICALP'98 in Aalborg.
