Visual identification guide

Most signals have a little white sign on the mast telling the type code of the signal.

Type codes Picture Look Description
PU
Rectangular (or somewhat slim-line) back plates with the top right corner cut off quasicircularly.
Found at platform points, shows either main signal or shunting signal aspects. The section on platform exit signals says which's when.
TU
Strictly rectangular back plates.
Found at platform points these signals are now mostly extinct. Their aspects are described in the section on main signals.
SU, U, AM
Tall back plates with semicircular top and bottom.
Main signals
I, SI
Ditto, but with a yellow top lantern. Other combinations than the shown samples exist.
Station entry signals

Tall back plates with semicircular bottom and rectangular top.
Distant signals
(no code)
Mastless »dwarf signals« with the top right corner cut off quasicurcularly, like PUs.
Shunting signals
VM, VI, VU
Signals looking like PUs or dwarf signals.
Left track signals. As far as I'm informed they are a Danish specialty.
