Signals for level crossings with roads

Most automatic level crossings are protected by special hexagonal crossing signals. Other crossings are protected by regular main signals (which are then marked with a black-on-yellow O). Most commonly these are crossings so close to platform tracks on stations, that the crossing automatic already must be closely coupled with the stations' normal signalling system lest any train stopped at a platform track could keep the gates down indefinitely.

In either case a diamond-shaped control signal may be located just before the crossing. In addition to duplicating the indications of the hexagonal signals, it marks the place where the train must stop if the crossing is not secured. The control signals also help pointing out the malfunctioning crossing if a hexagonal signal that covers more than one crossing is showing caution.
